Two fields that are easy to confuse
“1/5 odds, 3 places” describes a fraction and a finishing-position condition. The number three is not the divisor used to calculate the place price. The fraction is applied to fractional profit odds, not directly to decimal odds that already include stake.
Worked example: 1/4 versus 1/5
| £5 place part at 8/1 | Place fractional odds | Place return |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 terms | 2/1 | £15.00 |
| 1/5 terms | 8/5 | £13.00 |
If this is a £5 each-way single, the full stake is £10. A place-only return of £13 produces £3 profit after subtracting both stakes. The £15 return under quarter terms produces £5 profit. The finishing position must still qualify under the separately stated paid-place condition.
Where to find the terms
Use the original receipt and the applicable operator conditions. Sky Bet’s each-way help says paid places are shown on the bet slip and discusses promotional extra places separately. The calculator cannot infer the terms from a horse name, race size or today’s advertised market.
What changes the calculation?
- A non-runner may require a separate rule or market check.
- A dead heat can reduce the paid fraction of a particular part.
- A deduction can affect winnings under the applicable rule.
- An each-way accumulator is not a collection of independent each-way singles.
Our ordinary each-way calculator covers two equal cash stakes without those extra adjustments. For a confirmed dead heat affecting one part, first derive the odds of that part, then use the dedicated model with the available places and tied selections.
Keep the example reproducible
Record the stake per part, original odds, place fraction, paid positions and declared result. If any one of these is unknown, a precise-looking number is still conditional. Use the settlement checklist to resolve missing details before treating the result as a payment due.
